Survey Shows Hunters, Shooters Aim To Keep Spending
The hunting and shooting industries will continue to enjoy insulation from the economic downturn, a recent Southwick HunterSurvey.com poll shows. While consumers in other markets continue tightening their belts, shooting sports enthusiasts plan to open their wallets again this year to keep pursuing what they love.
“Recreational shooters and hunters are passionate about their sports. These survey results show regardless of economic times, most sportsmen will continue to set aside dollars to purchase the gear they need to keep hunting and shooting,” said Rob Southwick, Southwick Associates president. “While firearm sales are declining compared to recent historic highs, sales currently remain well above long-term averages. Between 20 to 38 percent of active participants express interest in buying new shotguns, rifles or handguns, respectively.”
About 52 percent of polled shooting sports enthusiasts indicated they plan to spend at least the same amount they did last year on accessories and shooting supplies. And the news gets better, with 20 percent anticipating spending slightly more and almost 10 percent expecting to spend “significantly more.” Just 7 percent expect to spend “significantly less” than they did a year ago.
Ammo leads the way in expected purchases, with 74 percent of sportsmen planning to spend money on ammunition, followed by 40 percent on gun cleaning supplies, 38 percent on handguns, 37 percent on hunting apparel, 35 percent on targets, 32 percent on miscellaneous gear, like stands, feeders and calls and 20 percent on bowhunting gear and optics.

Streamlight Introduces Rechargable Stylus Pro USB
Streamlight has introduced the Stylus Pro USB, a rechargeable version of its popular Stylus Pro pen-sized light. The compact light includes a USB recharging port, allowing tactical and other outdoor users to charge it on the go by using a computer or other electronic device for enhanced versatility and convenience.
“The Stylus Pro USB packs an extraordinary punch with the bright light it delivers, and its USB rechargeable feature,” said Michael F. Dineen, Streamlight VP of sales and marketing. “It makes a convenient secondary light for close-up tasks, such as reading a driver’s license or trail map, making equipment repairs or inspecting an engine.”
The new light features a white C4 LED to provide exceptional brightness and utility for a light its size — 70 lumens and 630-candela peak beam intensity over a run time of 3.5 hours. The light also delivers a beam distance of 50 meters. The fully regulated output provides consistent lumen performance over the battery life.
The Stylus Pro USB uses a lithium ion battery that is rechargeable up to 300 times; the battery recharges in just 2 1/2 hours. The light also contains a digital control circuit to prevent overcharging, and an optional AC wall adaptor is also available.
Depending on the configuration, the MSRP of the Stylus Pro USB ranges from $80 to $100 and includes Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.
